Jean Feldstein
Volunteer of the Year Award

The Jean Feldstein Volunteer of the Year Award honors the legacy of Jean Feldstein, a dedicated leader and selfless volunteer whose unwavering commitment enriched both the Jewish and broader Lancaster communities. Established by Jewish Family Service of Lancaster following her passing in 2009, this award recognizes individuals who embody Jean’s spirit of service, leadership, and compassion.

Who We Are Looking For
We seek nominees who exemplify the characteristics that made Jean an extraordinary volunteer:
  • Dedication to Service – Someone who consistently goes above and beyond to support the Jewish community and/or the broader Lancaster area through volunteer efforts.
  • Leadership & Initiative – A volunteer who takes on responsibilities with enthusiasm, helps organize efforts, and inspires others to engage in meaningful work.
  • Commitment to Community – An individual who fosters connection and strengthens the fabric of our community, whether through service at synagogues, Jewish organizations, or other civic initiatives.
  • Passion for Helping Others – A person who uses their skills, knowledge, and time to make a tangible impact, particularly in assisting those in need or advocating for community well-being.
Jean Feldstein
About Jean Feldstein
Jean was a member of the JFS Board from 2000 to her untimely death in 2009. During that time, she was JFS’ Treasurer, Editor of its Ad Book, and Representative to the Jewish Community Alliance of Lancaster (JCAL) Board.

Jean was also an active member at Temple Beth El and in its Sisterhood, serving on many committees including the search committees for three rabbis. She was Editor of the Temple Beth El Bulletin and was the major designer of the sanctuary in the synagogue's Rohrerstown Road building. In 1995, she was recognized as Congregant of  the Year.

In addition, Jean  volunteered in the general community by serving on the Youth Activities Committee of the West Hempfield Police Department.  Her knowledge, experience, and skills were  used to assist at-risk youth, giving them the opportunity to avoid entering the legal system.
Nomination Criteria
Nominees should demonstrate outstanding volunteerism within Lancaster county in a way that reflects Jean’s legacy. This could include service within Jewish Family Service of Lancaster, local synagogues, community boards, educational initiatives, social services, or broader civic engagement.
We invite you to help us recognize those who make a difference. If you know someone whose dedication to volunteerism mirrors Jean’s commitment, we encourage you to submit a nomination.

Together, let’s celebrate the volunteers who make Lancaster a stronger, more compassionate community.
Nominations closed for 2025
