Alice Yerman - 2025

A lifelong volunteer with a heart for service, Alice Yerman has quietly and faithfully enriched the Lancaster community for more than two decades. Born in Brooklyn and raised on Long Island, Alice earned a B.A. in English from Adelphi College and married her late husband, Andy, an engineer, during her final semester. Together, they raised four children—Bruce, Pam, Rachel, and Adam—and she is the proud grandparent of twelve.

Alice’s professional life included a mid-career pivot into computer programming, returning to school at age 40 and working in the field until she and Andy relocated to Lancaster in 2000. Once here, she found new ways to give back. For over 20 years, Alice has served as a dedicated teacher’s aide in the School District of Lancaster, supporting students at Ross, Carter & MacRae, and Lafayette elementary schools.

Her service to JFS spans more than 15 years, including over a decade on the board. She also contributes to the community meal at Grace Lutheran Church every fourth (and sometimes fifth) Wednesday, supports refugee resettlement efforts through Church World Service, and volunteers with her synagogue, Sqshaarai Shomayim, where she has served multiple terms on the board and continues to assist on the bereavement committee and with community meal coordination.

Even in her retirement community at Homestead Village, Alice brings energy and engagement—serving on the resident council, dining committee, and organizing Wii bowling setups.

Alice embodies the spirit of quiet dedication, showing up for her neighbors and community with compassion, consistency, and a genuine desire to help. She is an example of what it means to lead with kindness and live with purpose, and we are proud to honor her with this year’s Jean Feldstein Volunteer of the Year Award.
